The $ 10bn James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), launched on 25 December last year, is billed as the successor to the famous Hubble Space Telescope. It will make all sorts of observations of the sky, but has two overarching goals. One is to take pictures of the very first stars to shine in the Universe more than 13.5 billion years ago; the other is to probe far-off planets to see if they might be habitable. WASHINGTON (STATI UNITI) (ITALPRESS) – Il presidente degli Stati Uniti Joe Biden ha svelato la prima immagine realizzata dal James Webb Space Telescope, il telescopio spaziale più grande e potente mai realizzato. La foto mostra, con livelli di dettaglio mai raggiunti prima, un ammasso di galassie a 5 miliardi di anni luce di distanza dalla Terra. La Nasa oggi mostrerà altre immagini realizzate con il telescopio. La nuova immagine è stata chiamata “Webb’s First Deep Field”. L’ammasso di galassie appare com’era circa 4,6 miliardi di anni fa, quando la luce delle sue stelle iniziò il suo viaggio verso la Terra.
