LA VALLETTA (MALTA) (ITALPRESS/MNA) – Prime Minister Robert Abela has confirmed that he has begun internal discussions regarding the potential legalization of euthanasia in Malta.
Speaking on the national television station, Abela revealed that he had engaged in talks earlier this week with the Youth Advisory Forum, a group of nine young individuals who offer confidential, paid advice to the Prime Minister.
“These youths are brilliant, and they’re giving me so many ideas,” Abela said during the interview. “I discussed euthanasia with the Youth Advisory Forum before raising the topic with the Cabinet.”
The Prime Minister acknowledged that euthanasia is a sensitive issue but emphasized its significance. He explained that he wanted to first gather the perspectives of the Youth Advisory Forum before formally presenting the matter to the Cabinet.
Abela did not specify his personal stance on whether euthanasia should be legalized, but noted that the Labour Party’s 2022 manifesto called for a discussion on the issue, recognizing the challenges faced by individuals with terminal illnesses. The government will now consider the ideas from the Youth Advisory Forum as part of the next steps in the debate.
